In September 2002, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) awarded Northrop Grumman Information Technology a $511 million, seven-year contract to develop and support information systems that aid CDC public health research, surveillance, and intervention efforts and serve its centers, institutes and offices nationwide.

The CDC protects people's health and safety by preventing and controlling diseases and injuries; enhances health decisions by providing credible information on critical health issues; and promotes healthy living through strong partnerships with local, national and international organizations.

Northrop Grumman has designed, tested and installed scientific and administrative systems for the CDC October 1996. These include systems that collect and report disease data for surveillance and outbreak investigations; receive, store, retrieve and track laboratory specimens; and perform statistical analyses to identify risk factors and support the development of appropriate public health intervention programs. Northrop Grumman also provides wide-ranging database and infrastructure support.

Under the new contract, which was effective Sept. 1, 2002, Northrop Grumman will expand its work to include analyzing information requirements for existing and upcoming public health efforts; managing projects and endeavors critical to U.S. public health efforts; and assessing and training users in both CDC-developed and commercial software applications.

Northrop Grumman will also contribute to the formation of a public health information network - a secure, shared information system in which CDC and its public health partners can share public health, clinical and laboratory data, messages, alerts, relevant information and expertise. This will enable a coordinated response for enhancing public health efforts and homeland security.

As prime contractor, Northrop Grumman is responsible for systems analysis, scientific data management, systems development and the integration of various software applications.
